With 521 days left to the start of the Confederations Cup, the bleachers of Maracanã, the stage for the tournament-test final, began to take shape last week. According to the Emop (Public Works Department of the State of Rio de Janeiro), the 2,748 concrete pieces that will compose the new structure began to be installed. Thus, the reform reaches 32% of execution.

Some of the pieces that will compose the lower bleachers are already in the center of the field and will be assembled with the help of four cranes. The installation was started in a section 14 meters away from the sideline of the future lawn.

The structure will be the foundation for the numbered seats, and the completion should take place by June this year. Earlier, in March, the company responsible for the seats will be chosen. The installation of the material will occur shortly thereafter.

The new bleachers will not be split between sectors and will occupy the area from the edge of the lawn to the top of the old upper ring. Thus, when the reform is complete, the two levels of the stadium ring will meet each other, being separated only by a line of 110 box seats.

Box seats and coverage
In addition to the bleachers, the slabs of the box seats have also begun to be built. The step occurs after the complete removal of the old marquee. From September, the structure of the new coverage begins to be installed. The estimated period is six weeks.

The workers of the Maracanã Rio 2014 consortium, composed of Andrade Gutierrez, Odebrecht and Delta, also began the construction of access ramps. At present, half of this part of the work has been completed.

In total, four sets of ramps are erected, out of a total of six. Sixteen elevators and six escalators will also be installed. During the World Cup, as determined by FIFA, the disposal of the public should occur in up to eight minutes.

According to Emop, three thousand workers are working in the reconstruction of Maracanã in two shifts: from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m., from Monday to Saturday.

Cost
The work began on September 8, 2010, just over 16 months. The project will cost R$ 883.5 million. Emop states that 20% of the value was used in the reform.

So far, BNDES (Brazilian Development Bank) released 20% of the funding for the Maracanã works. The R$ 80 million contract was signed last August. In total, the loan will reach R$ 400 million.

In order to the other installments are released, the state government needs to present the executive project approved by FIFA. Moreover, it is also necessary to prove that the project goes through an analysis of environmental quality. Then, it will be required to deliver the description of the basic projects and the contracting of works around the stadium.

With 76,000 seats, the stadium will receive the Confederations Cup final on June 30, 2013. Twelve months later, on July 13, 2014, it will receive the last game of the World Cup. Scheduled for December 2012, the inauguration of the stadium can be postponed to April 2013, on the eve of the competition.
