With 38% of the works completed, Arena Pantanal should be ready by the end of this year. However, the tight deadline is no problem for the Secretariat of the World Cup in Cuiabá (Secopa), which points out the good progress of the works to ensure that the stadium of Mato Grosso for the 2014 World Cup will be completed by December.
The government's optimism is reflected even in the forecast for the beginning of the lawn planting, scheduled for May. Thus, the grass of the Arena Pantanal will have more than six months to develop properly, respecting FIFA recommendations.
According to the last report of the Santa Bárbara-Mendes Júnior construction company, responsible for the work, the soccer field earthworks, drainage and foundation are almost finalized.
In addition, the pre-cast factory has already produced 70% of the parts that will be used in the stadium. Emphasis on the pillars, pre-cast beams and slabs, almost finalized. According to Secopa, the manufacture volume of these parts should expedite the stadium construction from now on.
Superstructure
The sector with the most advanced works in the arena of Cuiabá is the western, where the raker beams, which will support the bleachers, were stuck and the slabs seated in three of four floors.
In the eastern sector, the pace is less fast. There, two floors have slabs fixed and the access towers began to be viewed by anyone who is outside of the construction site.
However, the northern and southern sectors of the stadium still are slow. All because on these areas the arena collapsible bleachers will be installed. This new phase, the installation of metal structures that will support the collapsible bleachers, is the great novelty of the construction site for the first quarter of 2012.
Another asset of Secopa is the fact that the rainy season in the capital of Mato Grosso, which harmed so much the progress of the work last summer, does not represent a serious threat to the work in the arena of Cuiabá.
"The rainy season in Cuiabá will not affect the development of the works, because we have already passed through the stage involving the land management," said the engineer João Paulo Curvo.
Cost
Initially budgeted at R$ 342 million, Arena Pantanal had an additive of R$ 13 million, which made the cost of the stadium rise to R$ 355 million. Counting additional items such as seats, information technology and electronic scoreboard, the price of the stadium of Mato Grosso should reach the mark of R$ 462 million.
There are also road works planned in a 1.5 km radius of the stadium, which cost, alone, additional R$ 140 million.
To allow the works, Arena Pantanal, which will host four World Cup matches, will have a loan from BNDES (Brazilian Development Bank) of R$ 392.3 million.
In late 2011, the bank released the second tranche of the funding, in the amount of R$ 21.5 million. Previously, Secopa had already received R$ 58 million and transferred to the Santa Bárbara/Mendes Júnior consortium.
Of the total amount of the loan, only R$ 285 million will go to the stadium. The remaining R$ 107.3 million will be invested in the urbanization project of the surroundings, which involves the construction of a square. It is expected that the third tranche will be released in the first quarter of this year.
