Romário has once again criticized the President of the Brazilian Soccer Federation (CBF) and the Local Organizing Committee (COL) for the World Cup, Ricardo Teixeira. In an interview to Veja magazine published today (6th), the former player and current Brazilian Congressman has defended the sacking of the executive, so that he may be able to defend his reputation against allegations of corruption, and has also said that the population should “organize protests against this man who does soccer a lot of damage”, referring to Teixeira.
“ Teixeira is someone who must be thanked for having brought the World Cup to Brazil, but he is now facing several corruption charges. If he left the CBF now, it would actually be good for him”, said the former Number 11, that defends the immediate removal of Teixeira from office.
Asked about how Teixeira could leave the job, Romário suggested a greater participation of society to pressure him. “Brazil needs to organize protests against those who have caused so much harm to our soccer, which is the case of Ricardo Teixeira”, he said, after stressing that “the only way he could be forced out is through the intervention of the federal government”.
The Congressman has also shown concern for the preparation of the 2014 World Cup. “Brazil has problems with its stadiums, with the airports, and with urban mobility. No legacy shall be left in areas such as health, education and accessibility. We are really 100% behind”, he said. In his opinion, “if things continue as they are, this could be the biggest disgrace in the history of all World Cups.”
