After the complete removal of the Maracanã marquee, the works of the stage of World Cup final entered into a new phase. According to the secretary of Emop (Public Works Department of the State of Rio de Janeiro), linked to the Secretariat of State Works (Seobras), the concreting of the bottom of the bleachers was started.
The workers of the consortium responsible for the work are laying the blocks that will be the foundation for numbered seats. The new bleachers will not have separation of sectors and will begin from the edge of the lawn to the top of the old upper ring. Thus, when the reform is complete, the two levels of the stadium ring will meet each other, separated only by a line of 110 box seats.
"The fans will be closer to the field and watch the games in a privileged position, since the top will move 12 meters toward the lawn. There will be no more blind spots in the stadium," said Hudson Braga, Secretary of State for Works.
According to Emop, the works only occur in the shortest bleachers. Then the box seats will be built. Moreover, the construction of the ramps has already reached 50% of the project schedule. During the World Cup, the intention is to make the flow of public in up to eight minutes. To do this, four sets of ramps will be built, in a total of six. Sixteen elevators and six escalators will be installed as well.
It is expected that by March 2012 the company responsible for the material is chosen and the seats are installed soon after. In September, the new coverage of the stadium will be deployed. The process is expected to last six weeks.
Maracanã is in works since September 8, 2010, for just over 14 months. In August this year, the workers, on strike, crossed his arms for 18 days.
With 76,000 seats, the stadium will host the Confederations Cup final on June 30, 2013. Twelve months later, on July 13, 2014, it will receive the last match of the World Cup.
