The works for the World Cup may reduce the capacity of Beira-Rio from 56,000 to 52,000 seats. The reason is the adjustment to the requirements of ABNT (Brazilian Association of Technical Standards), which determines a larger space between the seats of the stadium. The initial expectation was that Beira-Rio would receive up to 60,000 spectators during the World Cup.
Stopped for six months, the works of the stadium in Porto Alegre began in December last year, with funds from the club. With part of the lower ring demolished and the beginning of the foundations for the coverage, Internacional kept receiving matches in the stadium for an audience of up to 40,000 people.
In May, however, FIFA demanded that a contractor continue the works. Since then, occurs a contract negotiation with Andrade Gutierrez. The deliberative council of the club also discusses clauses of the document.
The text of the contract may be approved on this Thursday (15) during the council meeting. Then the contractor will have 30 days from the signing of the contract to resume the reform. According to the club, the work of the Beira-Rio will be resumed in January.
With the stalemate and delay in the works, Porto Alegre was out of the Confederations Cup. During the World Cup, the city will receive only five matches. In addition, the cost of interventions rose from R$ 180 million to around R$ 290 million.
