FIFA said, back in October, that Salvador and Recife would be standby venues for the Confederations Cup, with their participation in this competition being directly conditional on good progress of the work at the Arena Fonte Nova and the Arena Pernambuco, respectively. Now, the organization has set a time frame: they want these cities to decide about their participation or not in the test event by June 2012.
This information, in today’s issue (November 30th) of the “O Estado de São Paulo” newspaper, was disclosed by the director of the Local Organizing Committee (Comitê Organizador Local – COL), Ricardo Trade, at the Soccerex, a trade fair specialized in soccer which takes place up to this Wednesday in Rio de Janeiro.
Mr. Trade has said that FIFA has been giving the Confederations Cup a similar level of importance as the 2014 FIFA World Cup™ itself. “The Confederations Cup will not be just a test event, it is the event itself”, he said.
The executive also established a calendar for the competition: in March, the slogan for the international competition will be launched; then, in June, FIFA will decide on the host cities for the 2013 event, announcing if Salvador and Recife will be maintained or not among the host cities for this tournament; later, in November, there will be the draw of the teams, the date and venue of this draw being as yet undecided.
The Confederations Cup of 2013 already has five participating teams confirmed: Brazil, as the host country; Mexico as the champions of Concacaf; Spain, as winners of the FIFA World Cup™ in 2010; Japan as current Asian champions; and Uruguay, winners of the Copa America in 2011.
