Even having a prominent role in the 2014 FIFA World Cup™, the Itaquerão stadium was one of the last stadiums in the country to have started construction work. Only in May did diggers and tractors start leveling the site in the East Zone of São Paulo, which is more than one year later than for most of the Arenas to be used in the World Cup.

According to Odebrecht, the construction firm in charge of the work, the lost time has been recovered on a daily basis, on the work site. In only six months, the work has progressed by 19%. This completion index is close to that of the Arena Pernambuco in Greater Recife (22%), which has had its construction work carried out by the same company since January.

At this moment, some 800 laborers are laying the stakes and also constructing the concrete blocks of the Itaquerão. In the structural side, the first pillars and beams that will sustain the East Stands have also started to be fixed. According to the construction firm, 68% of the land leveling is now ready.

“Soon, when a significant part of the pillars has been installed, there will be the commencement of the assembly of the pre-molded concrete structures. Some of these pre-molded structures are made in a factory on the work site itself”, says the Engineering Department responsible for the construction.

The peak of the work should occur in the second half of 2012, when some two thousand people will be working on the site. The delivery of the Itaquerão has been penciled in for December 2013.

Ducts
The subcontractors hired by Corinthians also commemorate the end of an imbroglio which could have even paralyzed the work on this stadium. Two Petrobras ducts which crossed the subsoil of the site will also start to be removed this month.

The work is the responsibility of the SACS company and should take at least 75 days. The new tubes of 22 and 24 inches should reach the Itaquerão work site in two weeks.
