The Brazilian Federal Police does not rule out acts of terrorism targeting the stadium at Itaquera, in the East Zone of São Paulo, which will open the 2014 FIFA World Cup™.
This is the assessment made by the Superintendent of the Federal Police in the State of São Paulo, police constable Roberto Troncon Filho, during an interview to the Folha de São Paulo newspaper, published this Thursday (November 17th).
According to Mr. Troncon, the Federal Police considers that there is a “significant concern with terrorist acts” and also feels that the opening game of this competition, in São Paulo, as a possible “scenario of risk”, due to the fact that the opening ceremony will have the presence of several heads of state.
“An event like the World Cup can indeed be the stage for some kind of aggression, not against the Brazilian people but rather against a foreign delegation”. In his opinion, the Federal Police has been getting ready for what he calls “a scenario of high risk”.
The superintendent also highlights the fact that the control of those who enter and leave the country will be reinforced for the 2014 FIFA World Cup™. “Our activity is in relation to the migration currents and, for this reason, we have a plan for enhancement”, he says, also remembering the fact that 70% of all passenger traffic in Brazil occurs in São Paulo. “We have a very strong preventive activity, and also permanent interaction with police authorities”, he finalizes.
