At the time in which the population of Brasília is being mobilized to prepare the city for hosting the World Cup opening event, the Government of Distrito Federal announces that the major work for public transportation planned for the event, the Light Rail Transit (LRT) vehicle, may not be totally concluded by 2014.
One of the arguments used to claim for the definition of the opening match in Brasília is the city traffic, less chaotic than that in São Paulo and Belo Horizonte, the other cities competing for the event.
However, only one section of the LRT of the federal capital must be completed when the ball is first kicked in the Soccer World Cup opening match.
The 6.4-km section will connect Juscelino Kubitschek Airport to the South Metro Terminal. The project includes five stations and it costs amounts to R$ 700 million.
José Walter Vazquez Filho, Secretary of Transports, discarded yesterday (September 7th) the construction along Avenida W3 Sul. The reason: urban and environmental problems that will be hardly solved until 2014. In case the government insists to proceed with the project, there is risk of embargo by the Justice.
