One year and five months late, the work on the Arena das Dunas has started at last. This Monday (August 15), the land leveling got under way, this being the first stage of construction of the new stadium in Natal for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. However, this initial phase was originally scheduled for March 2010, as stated on the Responsibility Matrix prepared by the Ministry of Sports.
Within a week, the Government of the State of Rio Grande do Norte hopes to have received the license to start the demolition of the Machadão stadium and also the adjacent Machadinho, an area which corresponds to 30% of the total site where the new arena shall be constructed.
In April, the contract and the service order had already been signed, as also for the worksite which was installed one month later, but it was necessary to end the soundings of the site on the South Area, which is exactly where the work started this Monday (August 15). In addition, problems with the drainage around the stadium also delayed the start of the work. The Water and Sewerage Company of Rio Grande do Norte (Companhia das Águas e Esgoto do Rio Grande do Norte – Caern) had to intervene, to remedy a water puddle close to the Machadão complex.
Together with the land leveling, executive projects are being developed in São Paulo. The construction of the Arena is being managed by a public-private partnership (PPP) between the Government of the State of Rio Grande do Norte and Bahian construction firm OAS, thus establishing a Society for Specific Purposes (Sociedade de Propósitos Específicos – SPE), by the name of Arena das Dunas Concessão e Eventos.
The Arena das Dunas is the stadium which is most behind schedule out of all 12 World Cup venues, and the forecast is that, even so, the stadium shall be completed in December 2013.
