Admiral Gary Roughead, the Head of Naval Operations of the US Navy, has expressed this Wednesday his willingness to reach co-operation agreements with Brazil to make sure of security in the major sports events which Brazil shall be hosting over the next few years.

“The cooperation between the two Navies is extremely significant. We need to work together because security is essential in these sporting events”, Admiral Roughead said at a press interview in Rio de Janeiro.

Brazil shall host the Confederations Cup in 2013, the World Cup in 2014, the Copa America in 2015 and the Olympic Games (in Rio de Janeiro) in 2016.

The American admiral has this Wednesday met with the Brazilian Naval Commander, Júlio Soares de Moura, at a meeting where both reinforced the need to strengthen maritime security and bilateral cooperation between the two countries.

“We have both the abilities and the conditions to achieve good results in terms of security during the competitions”, said Commander Soares de Moura before saying that, so far, no treaty of cooperation has been signed between Brazil and the United States.

Admiral Roughead has been awarded the Order of Naval Merit, which honors civil and military personalities of any nationality, for important services to the Brazilian Navy.
While the admiral expressed his thanks for the honor, Commander Soares de Moura added that the sea is “essential” for the country as this is where the oil and petroleum reserves are located, and also as this is strategic as a way of ensuring Brazilian imports and exports.

"The relationship between the Brazilian Navy and the United States is much more than just diplomacy, and suggests a contribution for political and economic exchange”, the commander completed.

Admiral Roughead, who had intended to start his visit to Brazil last Monday, delayed his arrival after 30 American soldiers died in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan during an operation against the Taliban.
