Belo Horizonte shall no longer be implementing the system of rapid bus corridors (BRT) along Pedro II and Carlos Luz Avenues, as was the original plan for the city in preparation for the 2014 World Cup. According to the City Hall, “the cost of compulsory purchases has made the work unfeasible”.
According to the "O Estado de S. Paulo" newspaper, the removal of the buildings along Dom Pedro II Avenue shall have a cost of R$ 153 million, which is much higher than the R$ 83 million as estimated in the project when first prepared back in 2009. The work had resources from the Urban Mobility PAC, at a total value of R$ 146 million.
Instead of the BRT, the two avenues shall have exclusive bus lanes, including stations and shelters, without the need for any compulsory purchases. At present, the BRT system shall be maintained along Cristiano Machado and Antônio Carlos Avenues.
Before the BRT, Belo Horizonte had to abandon the expansion of the subway for the 2014 World Cup. The Federal Government, that would be financing the project, argued that the work would not be ready by the World Cup. The project for the subway shall now be included in the investments of PAC 2.
