The President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Jacques Rogge, has asked the Brazilian authorities to urbanize the slums of Rio de Janeiro before the 2016 Summer Olympic Games, the City Mayor, Eduardo Paes, announced yesterday (April 25th).

“The IOC President asked me to transform informal settlements. He told me this would be excellent for the Olympic movement”, said Mr. Paes.

According to the politician, Mr. Rogge said it would be “fantastic” if this could be done by 2016, even though this is not part of the Olympic legacy project for the city.

In the same speech, Mr. Paes agreed to carry out a plan that would mean the landscaping of 378 shantytowns with more than one hundred people by 2020.

The urbanization plan would require investments of about US$ 5 billion and would benefit 625 neighborhoods of the city.
