The tender for the bullet train that will connect the cities of Campinas, São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro will be postponed by the Government once again. The process would be finalized on the 11th, but should be extended for another 90 days so that more groups may submit proposals. In addition, some adjustments will be made to the Invitation to Bid.
According to a news report of the Folha de São Paulo newspaper, this postponement should be confirmed after a meeting between the Brazilian President, Dilma Rousseff, and Government technicians, scheduled for next week.
The Invitation to Bid for the Bullet Train (HST) was launched on July 13th, of last year, with the presence of the then Brazilian President, Lula. The opening of the proposals was originally scheduled for December 16th. At that time, Lula said that the work could be finished by the Summer Olympic Games of 2016.
The reason for the first postponement was also connected to the competitiveness of the tender process. The cost for presenting a proposal is estimated at between R$ 10 million and R$ 60 million. The expectation is that, with this new extension for an additional 90 days, two more groups – Spaniards and Germans – should submit proposals.
Budgeted at R$ 33.1 billion, the project of the Brazilian bullet train will have a track length of 500 km and will connect airports at Campinas (Viracopos), São Paulo (Cumbica) and Rio de Janeiro (Galeão).
