In a meeting held yesterday (17 September), Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, together with the Mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Eduardo Paes, and the State Governor, Sérgio Cabral, decided to change to Provisional Measure (Medida Provisória – MP) which created the Public Olympic Authority (Autoridade Pública Olímpica – APO), the institution that would be managing the work for the 2016 Olympics.

The new APO shall plan the organization of the Games, take care of the building work, and also be responsible for the legacy thereof. Thus, the initial plan of creating the state company Brasil 2016, which would be responsible for the execution of the projects, shall not now go ahead.

The text which is now being analyzed by the Civil Chief of Staff says that both the President of Rio and the State Government shall be part of this organization. There was also reinforcement of the appointment of Henrique Meirelles,  former President of the Brazilian Central Bank (BACEN), as the President of the APO.
