With the start of the Olympic Games in Brazil 2163 days away, the Rio 2016 Organizing Committee has completed yet another step in the process to choose the brand symbol of this sports event. It was this Thursday (2 September) that the Adjudication Committee chose one of the eight proposals made by the finalist agencies. Now, the definite logo shall be sent to be validated by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), to make sure that this logo and all its elements may be registered and protected throughout the world.

Now, one must wait for the New Year commemorations on Copacabana Beach, in Rio de Janeiro on 31 December, when the name of the winning agency shall be revealed, together with the logo to be used in the 2016 Olympic Games.

Aside from the international recognition, the logo of the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games shall have exposure for the following six years and shall be made eternal in the future pictures of the Rio 2016 Olympics, broadcast to billions of television viewers throughout the world. “We complete a historical process of the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games. The Adjudication Committee has worked with professionalism, enthusiasm and dedication. I am sure that the chosen logo will be to everyone’s liking and shall have an aura of success”, said Carlos Arthur Nuzman, the President of the Rio 2016 Organizing Committee.

Eight agencies reached the final phase of the selection process. The companies Brainbox Design (PR), Dupla Design (RJ), Future Brand (SP), Gad Design (SP), Soter Design (RJ), Studio Lúmen (PR), Tátil Design (RJ) and Vinte Zero Um (RJ) each received a pro labore payment of R$ 10 thousand as well as a diploma of participation, as an honor as thanks for the contribution to the selection process. The winning company shall be given an additional R$ 40 thousand for the creation of the brand and shall sign a contract for six months, with a possibility of the renewal thereof, with the Rio 2016 committee, for the provision of design services.

The Adjudicating Commission consists of 12 members who are nationally and internationally known, as established in the Invitation to Bid. The members of this commission were selected by the Rio 2016 Organizing Committee for their experience in the creation and approval of brand programs or for their prominence within the International Olympic Movement. Concept, Originality, Creativity and Applicability were analyzed.

“We have reached the end of a rich and transparent process, sure that we shall leave a legacy for Brazilian design. The brand brings forth the passion and transformation which are the essence of the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro”, explains Beth Lula, brand manager of the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Committee.

The selection process
The selection process for the choice of the company responsible for the creation of the Rio 2016 brand started back in April, when 139 companies signed up to take part in the initial briefing. Out of these, 86 companies sent the documents for certification and technical qualification, as requested for the second phase. After analysis by the Rio 2016 Committee, 24 were selected to participate in the individual interviews, which chose the eight companies shortlisted as finalists.

At the beginning of August, the finalists presented their logos. As none of them achieved the maximum score of 96 points, the agencies went through another round of work to adjust the proposals as assessed by the Adjudication Committee. This stage was already planned in the Invitation to Bid for the selection process (Paragraph 5.5.10 of the Invitation to Bid).

On 10 August, in individual interviews recorded on audio, the Rio 2016 Commission passed on to the finalist agencies the technical comments made by the members of the Adjudication Committee. After the interviews, the agencies had up to 27 August to present new proposals or make adjustments to the logos as already presented.
