The Federal Police has today (2 August) announced the purchase of new equipment for defusing explosives, as part of the corporation’s preparation for the 2014 World Cup. The items include a robot that can defuse bombs from a distance using a jet of water, a special kind of anti-fragment attire to protect the specialized inspectors that defuse explosive gadgets and also a tent to avoid detonations through special foam.
This equipment is part of three new vehicles of the Anti-Bomb Squad of the Brazilian Federal Police. Originally from Canada, these vehicles cost US$ 860 thousand each one.
According to criminal inspector Adauto Pralon, one of the people responsible for demonstrating this equipment, out of the three new vehicles of the Anti-Bomb Squad one shall be going to Rio Grande do Sul. With the other two remaining in Brasília - at the Criminalistics Institute and also at the Superintendence of the Brazilian Federal Police. Another two vehicles that the Department already possessed are in Salvador and Rio de Janeiro respectively, and the idea is that each of the 12 host cities for the 2014 World Cup shall have one of these vehicles ready for the World Cup.
The Director of the Federal Police Department (DPF), Luiz Fernando Correia, said that more investments shall be made in technological innovation, especially with regard to the inspection issue, as one of the axes of the strategic plan of the Federal Police is the quality of the scientific proof. According to Mr. Correia, this equipment is more advanced than that used in the Pan-American Games in 2007.
