The Association of Graphic Designers (ADG) has just published a note with the title of “2014 World Cup - A Wasted Opportunity?”, showing the position of this institution with regard to the 2014 World Cup logo. In the text, the national association of Brazilian designers makes an analysis of the meaning of the brand for major sports events on a world scale, and highlights the symbolic role of the drawing. It shows the ability of the host country to implement complex actions, says the note. The Association concludes that, in the Brazilian case, the result shows not only the poor quality of the drawing but also the general lack of planning to host the event.
Some excerpts of the ADG document:
"Through the symbol that has been proposed, we are showing the world our tremendous inability to deal with the project and also the creation of symbols. At the very least, this does not correspond to Brazilian reality, as our production in the design area shows a level of quality that comes forth throughout the planet. To this quality of our design, we can also add the quality of Brazilian architecture and engineering.”
"We are evidently facing a serious management problem. As all the time frames are overlapping, we are getting very close to showing the world that we are still children, very happy but lacking the rational capacity of planning the future, which is the core feature of design in the best sense of the word. In this perspective, unfortunately, the signal as presented shows itself to be the best synthesis.”
This note is signed by João de Souza Leite, a designer and professor at the School of Industrial Design of the State University of Rio de Janeiro (ESDI/UERJ) and also at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-RJ), through the Ethics Committee of the Association of Graphic Designers (ADG).
