President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has today criticized FIFA for their veto of Morumbi Stadium for the 2014 World Cup, considering the decision taken by the institution as “strange”, to say the least. “I find it strange that a stadium that has already held 100 thousand people, when Corinthians was São Paulo State Champion after 23 years, in 1977, is not good enough for the World Cup. I find this very strange”, Lula said to the journalists. However, the President admits that there “could be architectural or engineering requirements” that he is not aware of.
The veto of the Morumbi Stadium was announced yesterday by the Organizing Committee of the 2014 World Cup, presided by Ricardo Teixeira, the most important person also at the São Paulo Football Confederation (CBF). According to the original project, the stadium owned by São Paulo FC would be one of the 12 venues for the World Cup to be held in Brazil four years hence.
The greatest stage for football in the State of São Paulo should go through significant refurbishment work if it wished to host games of the 2014 World Cup. The project for refurbishment got as far as being approved by the institution, but the organizing committee of the city of São Paulo as required for the work.
