After the German company GMP, which has taken on projects and consultancy work on stadiums in Manaus, Brasília, São Paulo and Belo Horizonte, now it is the turn of the Britishers from Populous Architects who start to come to Brazil to participate in the conception of arenas for the 2014 World Cup and also, possibly, for the 2016 Olympic Games. Led by Briton Rod Sheard, Populous is in fact a global company.
In Brazil, this firm has already signed the project for the Arena das Dunas, in the city of Natal, together with the architects from local firm Coutinho, Diegues, Cordeiro. From this moment hence, Populous shall have a Brazilian division, based in Rio de Janeiro, where the latest company office shall be based.
Last week (27 May), architects Christopher Lee and Jerry Anderson, directors of Populous in the Americas, gave a presentation of the company at the head office of the Institute of Brazilian Architects, Rio de Janeiro Chapter (IAB/RJ). At the meeting, Lee explained that the company is responsible for the Olympic Stadium to be used at the 2012 London Olympics, and that the company has already designed some 900 stadiums and sports arenas, as well as the installations for nine Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, three Olympic Stadiums and six for World Cups. In Brazil, apart from the World Cup and the Olympic Games, Populous is eyeing the dozens of stadiums existing in the country, all needing improvement.
