During the whole of yesterday, several readers of the 2014 Portal have shown their disappointment at the logo that FIFA has chosen for the World Cup in Brazil. In addition to the widespread criticism of the logo itself, there are still doubts about the method of selection, shrouded in a great mystery: no-one knows who its authors are, and it is not even known if they are Brazilian or not. There are also reservations about the criteria which the institution has used to choose the celebrities that judged the different entrants. (see article).
An act of disgrace
Famous designer Alexandre Wollner, one of the forefathers of modern Brazilian design, who has created some logos that have become true icons within the country’s visual culture, such as those for Itaú Bank, Philco Electronics and Hering (read the interview on the 2014 Portal), summed up his shock at seeing the logo in one word: “It’s terrible”.
Wollner has made the following analysis of the logo: “In color, it looks like a face covered by a hand, as if expressing disgrace: just terrible. It is not a logo, but rather the illustration of an article “Brazil’s disgrace” (for having lost the championship)! Surely, the celebrities must have compared this with other drawings of similar low level”. And he completes his statement, in utter surprise : “But, after all, who took part in the competition?! And was there a competition?” Wollner also sent a message to these celebrities, for them to imitate the act of disgrace in choosing this logo.
Among Brazilian designers, the case stirred up controversy and disappointment, as there had been an agreement between the Brazilian Graphic Designers Association (Associação dos Designers Gráficos do Brasil - ADG) and FIFA, for the process of selecting the logos for the 2014 World Cup to be co-ordinated by the Brazilian institution. The professional people from this area decided to meet to reach a common stand for the class as a whole. Do not miss the next chapter.
