The colored version of the logo for the 2014 World Cup was unveiled today (1 May) by the site Globoesporte.com. In green, yellow and red, the drawing is a stylistic representation of the World Cup, comprising three hands which intermix with each other to get the shape of the Cup.
The black-and-white version was revealed by the IG website this Monday. Both this and the colored version were registered by FIFA at the Office of Harmonization for the Internal Market (HOMI), an office specialized in the registration of brands and patents for the European Union, as FIFA is based in Zürich, Switzerland. The person responsible for this registration is the French company Richard A. Buchel, which also works with properties owned by UEFA (European Football Association).
According to the Gazeta Press agency, the logo was chosen by a team of celebrities, with the President of the Local Organizing Committee for the World Cup (COL), Ricardo Teixeira; the Secretary-General of FIFA, Jerome Valcke; Oscar Niemeyer, Paulo Coelho, Ivete Sangalo, Gisele Bündchen and Hans Donner. The agency also mentioned that six other logos were in the running.
The officialization of the logo shall only take place on 8 July, three days before the World Cup Final, at an official FIFA event in South Africa. Before this date, FIFA does not allow the COL to make any kind of promotion related to the World Cup in Brazil.
“Without Brazil”
The main difference in the colored logo is that it does not include Brazil by name. In the previous version, the host country of the 2014 World Cup had its name spelt with a “z”, just below the World Cup itself.
In an opinion poll run yesterday by the 2014 Portal, 68% of the readers did not like the logo developed for the World Cup. Another 15% liked the design but did not like Brazil being written with a “z”. For 12% the logo is “beautiful” and represents “the true face of Brazil”.
